OVERVIEW ✍️

Empowers Gen Z investors to align their money with the causes they care about.

For Gen Z, financial decisions go hand in hand with ethics. 80% say they are more likely to support brands with a mission or purpose, yet most investment products offer little transparency or control. Existing solutions like ESG funds or custom indexing are either too expensive, too complex, or too generic.

Hey there,

When you invest, do you know what you’re supporting?

Have you ever wondered what your investments are building?

Is it shaping progress—or fueling problems?

  • What you invest in today defines the world of tomorrow.

  • Wealth grows stronger when it grows with purpose.

  • Aligning money with meaning turns capital into change.

THE PROBLEM 🚩

Younger generations are entering their prime investing years.

  • 62% of 18–24 year olds now participate in retirement plans (up from 30% in 2006).

  • 80% of Gen Z say they base purchases on brand mission or purpose.

Yet, existing funds lack transparency and personalization — leaving young investors unsure whether their money aligns with their values.

BACKGROUND ✍

Traditionally, investing has been defined by one measure: financial return. Portfolios were judged on growth, performance against benchmarks, and the ability to secure retirement.

But younger generations are reframing the question. Gen Z and Millennials aren’t just asking “How much will I earn?” — they’re also asking “What am I funding?”

This shift expands the purpose of investing from wealth-building alone to creating both financial and social impact.

So, what is Impact Investing? 🌍 💚

Impact investing is an approach that directs capital toward companies, funds, or industries that generate measurable positive outcomes—whether in clean energy, healthcare, gender equality, or other mission-driven themes—while still aiming for competitive returns.

USER RESEARCH 🔎

As part of the discovery and problem definition phase, I partnered with UX researchers to define the problem space and uncover user needs around ethical and thematic investing. Together, we designed and ran an unmoderated Qualtrics survey through UserTesting with the goal of validating interest and identifying opportunities for Vanguard to better support values-driven investors.

Participants

  • 50 Gen Z investors (ages 21–27)

  • All expressed interest in ESG/impact considerations

  • Evenly split between current Vanguard clients and non-clients

FEATURE SOLUTIONS ✏️

Since full custom indexing wasn’t possible within the project scope, our designs focused on transparency and control within the constraints of mutual funds and ETFs. Here are the solutions we explored:

IMPACT LIBRARY ITERATIONS ✏️

As part of refining the Impact Library Categories, I explored multiple ways to present complex information in a way that felt approachable and scannable. The challenge was to design a structure that could scale across dozens of themes while still making the experience simple for Gen Z investors.

  • Option 1: Single Column List

    • ✅ Clear and easy to read

    • ❌ Too much scrolling, repetitive layout, doesn’t scale well for multiple themes

  • Option 2: Two-Column Layout

    • ✅ More compact and visually balanced

    • ❌ Uneven sizing felt inconsistent, hierarchy was unclear, difficult to compare themes side by side

  • Option 3: Card-Based Grid

    • ✅ Compact, allows quick scanning of multiple themes at once

    • ❌ Overwhelming on small screens, icons became too small, harder for accessibility

BONUS SOLUTION 🎯

After multiple rounds of testing with restaurant owners and staff, the final product was delivered and is still being improved. Feedback shaped every step — from reducing double-bookings to making table views easier to scan. What we launched solved the immediate problems owners faced, while leaving room to keep refining the details as restaurants grow.

Personalized Impact Quiz

Personalized Impact Quiz

To further personalize the experience, we designed a guided quiz that matches users with investment themes aligned to their values.

  • Step 1 – Interactive journey
Users select up to 10 causes they care most about (e.g., gender equality, climate change, AI innovation).

  • Step 2 – Tailored recommendations
Based on their selections, the system generates a customized set of investment themes and highlights funds that align with their priorities.

  • Step 3 – View results
Results are displayed with a clear “match percentage,” giving users reassurance and clarity that their portfolios reflect the causes that matter to them.

TAKEAWAYS ✍

This project was uniquely shaped by the perspective of Gen Z—both as designers and as users. By embedding the voices of Gen Z investors throughout research and design, we created a solution that reflects their values, habits, and expectations.

Gen Z doesn’t just want financial returns; we want our money to mean something. They believe that investing should be more than growing wealth - It should reflect who they are and what they care about.
